Personality traits of a good pastry chef

As a pastry chef you will be working with fine detail so you will need to be organized at all times. Everything needs to be planned and prepared before making something. Pastry and baking is very different from being a chef in the hot kitchen. Everything needs to be measured out exactly so you will have to be precise and working neatly.Cleaning after every step is important.

You will have to have immense passion for this industry. For some pastry chefs they are on their feet more than 12 hours a day so it basically takes over their lives. Baking bread starts early in the morning so you will need to be an early riser with lots of motivation and being able to work hard. You should also be able to get on well with people. This is very important if you are setting your sights towards becoming a head pastry chef. This will involve delegating and constant contact with people.

Patience is obviously an important aspect of how to become a pastry chef. Of course this develops over time so this especially applies in the beginning. When working with pastry items that don’t work out the first time you need to be able to persevere and to work as carefully as possible, just like an artist.

When it comes to talking about artists we come to creativity and imagination which should be used at all times. Using your own ideas will definitely get you ahead in your career. People will start noticing little touches that you add and word will get out.

Experience and Education of a pastry chef

It is vital to be able to measure accurately and to know the various mixing methods. Should your cake be made with the creaming method or by whisking? Starting off your career as a pastry chef you may not think it is necessary to learn about management or business, but if you plan on going further up the ranks and end up the head pastry chef these roles will definitely come into play. You will need to know about stock control and accounting. You may even decide to open your own business one day.

You will also need a basic knowledge of the science that goes into the baking process. If you go to a pastry chef school this will be included in your curriculum . There are also many pastry chef schools that are available from prestigious schools in France to part-time courses in your area. You will learn what role different ingredients play in the process, such as baking soda. Food safety is a very important part of any food industry that all chefs should know about. You will also need to know what makes a dessert appealing to the eye.

Chefs know that when they enter the industry they are not going to paid well, but a pastry chef will be paid a lot better than a chef who has just come out of chef school or who even has a few years experience. Obviously the more experience you have as a pastry chef the more you will be paid.

Great article. I am not a chef, but I love to cook and bake. I have spent all of my working life in food service. You are right, being able to stand for long periods of time is a prerequisite in this business. Not to mention the long hours. Thanks for a great hub. I would love to read more about you as a chef and cooking. Teresa
