Finding a family dentist for your kids

I remember sitting in the big chair when I was about five at my local family dentist staring up at the friendly face of Dr Cutter when I was just learning to brush my teeth. I can’t say I ever hated going to the dentist because this guy had the magic touch. He taught my brother and I how important it was to brush our teeth and what would happen if we don’t. This is an example of a family dentist that tells you why it is so important to find the right one.

It is so often that people have had bad dental experiences. This often goes back to their childhood.  The thought of going to the dentist really does not appeal to them unless it is an emergency. Unfortunately it is difficult to erase a painful memory from a dentist, but by choosing someone who is caring enough there shouldn’t be this fear that develops.

Another unfortunate thing is that these days many dentists have become so focused on their business and that often takes the caring element out of things so this will make your task in finding your family dentist that much tougher. In the  same token finding an affordable family dentist is not easy either. Some people will want to find someone who specializes in childrens’ teeth, but it is not a bad thing for kids to have the same dentist right up until adulthood.

When looking for a family dentist you basically need to shop around. Much of the time you will hear good things about dentists just by word of mouth. Ask other moms what dentist they are taking their kids to. It might be a good idea to phone the dentistry and if you get a nice friendly voice on the other end that is definitely a start. If a dentist is able to take a few minutes off in order to see you and discuss the situation that is a good sign, otherwise you should not look further down that road.

As for the atmosphere and appearance of the facilities that is also something to look into. The family dentist should ultimately be there to offer services to all age groups so they should facilitate accordingly . You should be greeted by a colourful mood, with plenty of activities for your kids to keep themselves busy. This could be in the form of coloring books or watching their favourite cartoons with a set of headphones.

One important thing you will want to take note of when visiting the dentist for the first time is how he communicates with your child and how your child responds. A dentist who is always talking to a child, making them feel comfortable and telling a few jokes in between to ease the tension is a good find.

how i wish i have met a friendly dentist back then...

all i can remember is most of the time, the dentist where my mom brought me before are those strict looking guys who don't talk much and don't smile...maybe that's one reason why when i was a kid i am not fond of going to the dentists, i'm afraid of them! but now, thanks that as i grow older i come to meet the good and friendly ones and they makes me feel safe with them and make me realize how important it is to take care of our teeth and mouth. I wish parents will choose the dentist to take care of their children and not to scare them away. I like your article, it brings me in a nostalgic mood. lol!
