How to use organic pesticides to get rid of pests in your vegetable garden
83You can decide to go organic or not, but there are no half-way measures so you can’t have a little organic vegetable garden and in your cabbage you decide to put down sluggum to kill the slugs. I must admit it is tempting after coming to inspect your garden in the morning and everything has been demolished.
Chemicals and poisons are not the only way to get rid of pests in your vegetable garden. It’s a good idea to plan where you are going to plant your vegetables first. I like to use the concept of companion planting, which sends bugs flying. For example if you plant onions with carrots the carrot flies don’t like the smell of the onions. Likewise planting marigolds will attract the bugs you want in your garden and they will also help get rid of the nasty bugs. There are also many organic pesticides on the market that are available and totally safe to use.A homemade organic pesticide can even be made to keep your costs down.
organic pesticides for vegetables
There are a whole range of organic pesticides s that can be used to get rid of unwanted pests. Some will eradicate the ants that attack the root vegetable as well as the Japanese beetle. There is an organic pesticide to get rid of slugs of snails as well as those that attack your orange and lemon trees.
organic farming pesticides
Farming used to involve a tremendous amount of chemical sprays and in the end you really didn't know what you were eating. It could be a couple of tomatoes sprinkled in toxins, but slowly farmers are turning towards the organic methods and using organic farming pesticides. There are strict rules for this. Only organic fertilizers, manure and compost can be used.
some other way to get rid of pests organically
- Scatter broken egg shells on top of the soil. Slugs don’t like a rough surface to glide over. Egg Shells also have the added bonus of providing nutrients such as calcium for the soil.
- It is a good idea to attract useful insects into your gardens like ladybirds and hoverflies for example. They enjoy herbs such as parsley, catnip and dill and yellow flowers like marigolds and poppys. Ladybirds also devour aphids as well as other delicious creatures!
- Learn about Companion Planting and what vegetables and flowers are friends with each other. Plant Geraniums in your cabbage patch and you won’t have to deal with a worm problem. Geraniums are great scattered in salads and can be used in baking as well.
- Salt will kill a slug instantly. It will also harm your plants so you will have to use this method outside your bed. Seaweed is a better option. It contains salt, but is good for the soil. Don’t put it directly on top of the stem of your plant because it will probably harm it.
- Slugs will be shocked by copper like lightning. Placing copper sheeting around the base of a plant, a pot plant or in the soil will be enough to send slugs packing.
- Slugs and Aphids also don’t get on with garlic so where you see you have had a few slug attacks plant a couple of cloves of garlic in the soil. One clove of garlic will split up into at least a dozen. You can do the same with onions and shallots. Just make sure to give them some space and know that onions are keen on a bit of sunshine.
- The best way to get rid of the cabbage worm is probably to stick a piece of fine netting over your cabbages to prevent them from being attacked. Cabbage worms can chomp through your cabbages is no time. Don’t grow the cabbage family in the same area year after year. Instead rotate them to a different spot. In this way you will prevent more pests from spreading in the soil.
- Lastly check your leaves occasionally to see there are no creepy crawlies having their lunch or dinner. They will most likely be out there at night or when there is some drizzle in the air.
